Excellent, keep us updated. We launched a direct mailing campaign last week, starting with 100 mailings to very directed potential customers. It has only been a few days, but if results do start coming in, I will start a little case study as well explaining how well it worked :)

How much are you going to repeat the mailing? I've heard you can increase your response rate 2-3x just by cold calling the prospect in the same time frame as when they'd get the mailer.

I hope the best for you with google ad words, all I got was alot of impressions,a few click thrus and a $78.00 bill. Not one customer.I could have spent that on a local news ad and would have done better.
(if you dont get so many click thru/impressions they turn off your ad.)
As I said I hope you fair better.

JeremyV,
How'd your direct mail thingy go off?

Well, the mailing is only a little over 2 weeks old. I mailed out 100 mailings. 8 came back due to wrong addresses or the businesses moved. That left us with 92 mailings that hopefully made it to where they were supposed to go.
Thus far, no direct sales, although there was an email or two regarding services from the mailing.
I don't want to hijack this google thread too much, but quickly, regarding what the ad was like...
It was simple really. Printed envelopes here with the company logo/address. We also have color letterheads that were printed, so I used those in the mailing to further force the company name, logo, url, and colors down their throats :D
The letter simply introduced ourselves and since all mailings are targeted towards new formed businesses, it just explained how easy it is to get their business online, how cheap it can be, and how it can help their business grow.
Aside from the formal letter, I threw in a little brochure essentially listing the plans and their features. I also threw in a page with a coupon on it, for both tracking sales generated by the mailing, and to provide an incentive for them to sign up. Lastly, I threw in my business card so even if they don't need hosting immediately, they may keep the card and come across it at a later date.
The mailing was fairly cheap, and even if only a handfull of signups come out of 100 mailings, the costs are covered. But the most important part of the mailing is building brand recognition. Every piece of paper they received had our logo, url, name, etc... so at the very least, there are more people who will recgonize the name in the future :)
well,
it truns out i didnt get any clients from it 9 click thures, 580 adviews.
the keywords i picked were rock solid ones but i guess i didnt hit it at the right time. ohh well live and learn.
I will not be running this again. i can work for some but who knows

At least you tried :) You wouldn't know unless you gave it a shot. Just so happens it doesn't fit your model. No worries.
Like many, I haven't wasted my time with high search engine placement or keywords etc. I'd rather get all (most) of my new clients from referals from current customers.
For example, just this morning I had a client sign up, and in the order form comment box they put "A friend of mine who uses you said you are great, so I'm signing up". Now that in itself isn't out of the ordinary, but he then continued to sign up for 3 more accounts over the next hour :D
So I'd rather get those types of new customers rather than hope random people are typing in search terms and click on your link. Unless your hosting company services a specific niche and you can make use of certain keywords, I think it is best to spend a little advertising money elsewhere :)

Google can be good or bad.
Last month i got a 1200.00 bill because my ads got "networked".. i'll NEVER checkoff the use networked sites anymore as that automatically used my highest bid for every click instead of an average. I was upset about that.
I broke even, but whats the point of breaking even if your spending that much money upfront.. i want to see some profit off my advertising.
In a way, pure growth is good but how good if you can't make a profit and grow in other areas outside of your customer base?
