better to choose one based on location close to your home or based on other requirements?

depends on what you need. I have servers in New jersey and Texas. New Jersey I have mostly there for game servers and IRC. Texas is for my website hosting and Game servers. and in both locations I have multiple servers. So explain your needs and maybe we can help find out a better answer for you.

Agreed. What part of it really boils down to is whether or not you think you will need physical access to the servers. If you will, then you'd obviously need to choose a datacentre which you can easily get to (and one that doesn't mind you popping in). If you won't need physical access (or if you are rich and can afford to spend money on travel ;)) then perhaps the location of the datacentre won't be much of an issue for you.

FYI, we provide our sales/support service from the UK, but our servers are based in the US (East Coast). This has never been an issue for us, and in any case, we can simply have the technicians at the datacentre perform any work on the servers (we'd obviously have to pay though).

So, it really depends on your particular requirements.
