View Full Version : Latest server - Whad'ya think?
Hey. Just purchased my latest server let me know what you think.
I went with a P4 With HT over a dual xeon 2.ghz at the same price. Mainly because the P4 was compaq
(Compaq) P4 3.06Ghz with hyperthreading
Dual 120Gb Seagate 7200RPM HDD's
2GB RAM
100GB Burstable williams and verio bandwidth. I colocated inside exchange (200 paul) in San Fran.
Im paying $750/mo and payed a $299 setup fee
The server is managed and the network has been absolutely fantastic so far. Let me know whadya think?

I'm so out of touch with processors that he didn't know there were P4 above 2.7-ish DOH! I need that set-up for a home machine!!!
For some reason my servers are always better then my home computers, i guess its cause i cant "lease" a computer in the same fashion as with a dedicated server. Im currently running a Pentium 3 599mhz with 640mb ram. damn im outdated :(. woops i've gone off topic
While I think it's a great machine, I think a 3Ghz machine is an overkill for a server. When you're running linux, the processor doesn't play the biggest part in speed, it's the amount of ram.
But nice server!

I agree there - RAM is the single most important aspect of a server.

Well i order all the hardware for the company I work for. I would have taken the dual xeon over a single p4.
The xeons come with hyperthreading anyway, and its a dual machine. Though your machine will be fine, you are also paying a hefty price for the 3 ghz chip since its on the top of the Pentium 4 spectrum.
Overall you win either way, but Dual is always better, and most dual boards are solid anyway.
