I am reading, reading, reading about VPS and have had some customers inquire about VPS hosting. Thinking about H-Sphere. Anyway, what seems to be an average price for a VPS account at a typical web host (Not talking about the hosts that give their service away. I don't compete on that level. We compete on sales and service).

I used jvds.com (Owner: Rus) for a short while, and his service was nothing short of excellent, but if anything, it WASN'T one of those giveaway unlimited type services, it was a real business. Check out his pricing at jvds.com.

EDIT: I also had a friend recommend EV1 VPS's, and EV1 are anything but a "give away" sort of hosting company and it has always seemed to price its' products just right! http://www.ev1servers.net/english/vps_series.asp

We looked at the following hosts to get an idea ourselves:

Webintellects.com
rackforce.com
atjeu.com
rose Hosting
jumpline - lower end pricing for vds IMHO
westhostlinode.com
vps colo
defenderhosting
dinix.net
servint
fluidhosting

You'll get a pretty broad range. Some focus on shared-like low end accounts, while others do offer VPs accounst that could sub for a low end dedicated.

Good luck!

Adam-

We tried to price them in the middle, not the lowest. Our resellers will soon have access to servers powered by Virtuozzo, so we wanted to leave them a lot of room to under price us.

At first I thought we were a little high, now I think we're probably a little low.

Plus, with VPS, this is our first non-oversold product. We did it this way as we do not have a way to guage actual utilization.

While I do not yet have data to back it up, I personally believe that most higher end VPS sellers are non-oversold. Could be wrong, but that is what I believe. Plus, the prices charged generally support this thought.

headsurfer,

Just incase there was any confusion and to clarify, I was not naming EV1 Servers as a cheap host, I stated that EV1 Servers are anything but a "give away". In saying this, you are not overpriced either.

Maybe at the start your prices were as you thought to be high, because everyone who had VPS technology tried to sell quick to get to break-even state (and to get more sales you lower your prices) but even though you think you are low right now, I think you've hit the mark and got the best price going. It's good you planned to allow people to underprice you, and now I learn from your post that you haven't oversold VPS, that makes the plans you have on offer better than those other companies with dirt cheap pricing who presumably oversell.

I think you were understood Adam. Give Away hosts have a bad rep, in my opinion and EV1 does not give away. Understood. :D

sonixi,

Thanks for understanding, its 3am and I've had no sleep for 3 days; forgive me!

What sort of demographic are you looking at getting? I know you're not after give away host prices, but are you looking in the low priced arena, or a slightly higher offering for larger clients?

So, am I right in gauging $35-$45 as an average VPS price for an average amount of space, CPU, RAM?

What is the recommended CPU/RAM for the server in order to divide a server with VPS? Dual Xeons?

How many VPS accounts could one put on a Ded server with, say, Intel Dual Xeon 2.4 GHz and 2 GB RAM? (Without overselling)

Just be jumping around a few VPS sites I know of, and those that headsurfer mention, that price looks quite alright in my books :) As for specification and the technical, I couldn't help you. Headsurfer would have to get to you on that or someone else with sufficient knowledge about running VPS.
