OK, I was browsing the datacenter section and noticed an increasing trend of people wanting to run their own datacenter, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it but I do see an increase of interest among webhosts to build and run their own DC. A few years ago, people are content in running their own servers, now it's a totally different situation.

Am I missing something?

Expectations always progress. I think that the cost implications are lower though making it possible for people to run a lower number of servers and still turn a profit.

Those wanting to run their own datacentesr don't understand the cost involved. Now, leasing space inside a telco hotel, or any carrier neutral facility is one thing, but if you seriously think it'd be a good move for your business to build a datacenter from scratch, you're sadly wrong. :)

I guess it also depends on how each host interpretes "having a datacenter". In marketing people tend to change definitions of the words as they see fit in order to put themselves in a better light. ;)

Indeed. I would say a datacenter would cost in the upper 10's of thousands as a minimum. But that is in reach, whereas the cost 5 years ago was much higher.

If your refering to a real datacenter, something like ThePlanet, or EV1's Datacenters, than thats more like 15Million + for just the building, not to mention all the server's being used to fill it. Say a 50,000 SQ foot Datacenter, with rasied flooring and all the other essentials... thats probably looking at 5 Million for the buliding and the racks, and temp controls... and security. Then say you want to get 5000 servers, just to start say at around $800 per server your looking at about $4,000,000 for those. In reality your looking for about 10-15 Million Min, for a half decent datacenter.

That's the global tendency. You will find more and more shared-account holders who are willing to own a dedicated server, hence the need for more DCs, even small ones but offering higher level of security and management. I think mini-DC within a leased DC, or reseller DC are going to become a hit on the market.
