I've been using dnscache for a while now, and I recently setup tinydns too. They're both great! They use much less memory than BIND and, IMO, are much nicer to configure and maintain (despite the confusing documentation). According to tests they're also both much faster than BIND. I haven't tested that myself, but I'd be suprised if they're not at least a little quicker.
When I was first reading about DNS and BIND I thought to myself that combining a proxy/cache and a server didn't make much sense - just think about if squid and apache were one program. If that doesn't make sense to you either, or if you just want to free up some more resources on your nameservers, give djbdns a spin sometime.
