View Full Version : What motivates you?

I've got to redo our website and I'm just sick of messing with PHP/mySQL since it's all I've pretty much done besides a few C++ applications for the last 2 1/2 or 3 years.
How do you go about getting motivated?

It depends. Why are you redoing the web site? Is this going to include making the code easier to update?
I usually tell myself what's in it for me: less tweaking needed after I'm done, less work to make sweeping changes, better operations, what have you.
If it's legacy code from someone else, I can usually look at it and say, "Think how much better it will be once it's done *properly*!!!"
That, or lots and lots of :coffee:

Well, I bought a template @ template monster which will be a bit more appealing, and I was going to update a lot of information since it's old.
I'd have to code a few scripts for it too. (testimonials, news, etc)

I hate doing reptitive (sp?) things. Everytime I do something, I generally try doing it a new way. But if it's for profit, that's kind of motivation in itself.

I know, that's what I'm telling myself, but I must agree. New stuff is fine, but repeatiive stuff makes me not want to touch it.

Ya, like I said repeatitive stuff drives me nuts and I hate doing it. Samething goes with homework (college and highschool) I tell myself I'm going to do it at a set time, then I do it and feel better :D. Works the same way when coding

I never have any motivation to fix things. I will sit down with good intentions.. stare at it for an hour, and it is like my brain refuses to do it :D Sorry I can't help
I get motivated by money :D

motivation is hell, normally its so that I don't have to screw with it to upgrade it next time, but normally i just wait till i have some funny feeling that says to program, then i do it :)

I have found it hard to get motivated lately with programming in general. I am not sure what it is, maybe just a phase in my life or something but it's like I will sit down, start up coding and just instantly feel depressed for some reason.
Anyhow, I also used a TM template for Protollix and I kept it all mostly static HTML. It was actually easier that way. Be warned though, the HTML skills of some of the TM web designers are severely questionable. I had to tweak my template for a couple hours to get it to display properly in anything other than IE (including Dreamweaver and Frontpage - they showed a blank page).
However, if you don't anticipate updating much of the site frequently (a host really doesn't need to update much. prices maybe, little news snippets, etc) then you can just code a couple functions into the template/php page to display that.
A full-fledged "cms" isn't really required for a host, IMO. It's quite easy for me to just open my html file in CuteFTP's integrated editor and make a few quick changes :)
