Im not sure how many people get spam on a daily basis, but I for one am sick of it.

Maybe its time to come together and as a work and get a mail server with spam filters and what not. Now everyone has many domains and what not so it will need to be versatile, but I think it may make sense.

Or at least a collective effort on methods to rid the world of spam (at least on your computer). I'm thinking of retiring my first two email addresses (that I used ever on the net), as I made some mistakes and now they are spam collectors (and little else).

It is really going to be hard to get rid of spam. Spammers are finding new ways to send it out. For example, they have started using the distributive method, where they have control of multiple home user machines. These machines send the emails out, much like the DDOS attack.

There is really no way for a program to make a distinction between SPAM mail and regular mail. Yes, it can use patterns but patterns are not full proof.

Oh no, there's a way to totally block it and still let the good mail through. I just don't know if I want to embark on the project, it will take a lot of coding...

How about telling us how to totally block it? Maybe one of the coders on this board, myself included, could work on it?

I hesitate to post it publicly, unless we collaborate on something because it would seem to me that this would be worth a LOT of money.

Anyting could be worth a lot of money, however (per my PM) the whole point of a discussion forum is to discuss things, so maybe this should have been emailed to a few of your acquaintances instead and the thread locked?

*cough* bloody dangling carrots *cough*

Spill it man, spill it! We want to know this revolutionary approach. :)

I thought I had one a while back by taking 3rd party spam reports, identifying distinct (and large) similarities in large quantities then using these similarities as a fingerprint. It's already being done though, so I was too late. Not to mention, just the costs of finding out if it infringed on current virus scanning patents wasn't worth the trouble.

Well, this thread has had me doing some Web-based research, checking out anti-spam methodology, and it looks like someone is already using an approach quite similar to the one I thought of (more or less). Read about it here:

That didn't sound like you. I was a little concerned. Thought maybe you were stressed out or something...

Do you think something like spam assasin could be modifed to filter outgoing mail from a server then use filters in exim or what ever software to block it?

Has anyone ever tried MailScanner?
http://www.sng.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailscanner/

It works with exim and MRTG! I haven't tried it but I think I may give it a whirl!

my work email only receives email with the title "Sales". Its a shame what we have to resort to stop ourselves being bombarded with unsolicited email messages.

while it may be a good idea in theory, this also prevents automated emails that you actually want to receive from getting to you. say i sign up for a forum (such as hho =) and need to confirm my membership, but the email addy is not in the whitelist and noone is going to read the automailer's inbox (if it even exists). what do i do now?

you may find it hard to believe, but i get hardly any spam at all and the stuff that i do get gets delete pronto with a minmum of effort and angst.

The only problem I see with Titan Key is that it is only sold to ISP's. Then they have licensing fees, installation fees, etc. that make it unrealistic for a single computer or even a smaller mutliple PC network. I like the idea, however.

very interesting concept, but as mentioned above, valid "auto" emails won't get through.

So I guess you need to have a throw-away free account on yahoo or something to handle forum signups and the like?

Hi Sean,

Just wanted to chim in and let you know that the TitanKey technology will be offered to the consumer market first quarter of 2004. What we call Keymails will allow you to receive valid auto emails from subscription, online orders,....etc. You can read more about the feature set here http://www.titankey.com/productInfo/whatIsKM.html .

I would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
