5 hours of writing every night for three or four months at a time :D. Yes, it is all from scratch -- copying other people's work would get me into all kinds of trouble with my editors.

Did you actually write these technical docs allan? Are you working for the NSA? Interesting if so...

Several different areas: My primary source is hands-on experience, I only write about stuff I work with. I also rely heavily on RFC's and, when applicable, ISO's, I do a lot of research on mailing lists, and finally I read a lot of technical books.

DARN! How can you read so much? I hate reading. I rather have someone read things to me, or just poke around to understand how things work. :D Thats how I learn.

Poking around is good, but it is also important to understand the big picture and that's why knowing what the standards are is so important. For example, if you are configuring a pair of routers for VRRP, and you know how they should behave based on RFC 2338, then it should make the whole process easier. Its also important to know when vendors stray from the standards -- especially if you work in a multi-platform environment (which most people do).

Very true. Plus, when you read, you don't miss things you might miss when poking around. I know reading is a better idea. I am not disputing that. :)

True. And of course if you did work for the NSA, anyone that has already responded to this thread would be "taken care of" and there'd be no further discussion...
Well thankfully that isn't true. :D

Uhhh...Mark, you see that black van parked across the street from your office? That's the NSA "re-education" division. We don't so much "take care" of people, as brainwash them into thinking along proper lines.
Don't believe me? Have you noticed how the NSA News Channel (also called FOX News -- and the acronym for NSA News Channel is the reverse of CNN, just as FOX is the reverse of CNN) has increased in popularity since the premiere of American Idol -- we have placed subliminal messages instructing people to watch FOX News in all the songs sung by the American Idol contestents. This technology was pioneered by our uberagent Paula Abdul who developed this technology as part of her lip syncing machine in the late 80s.
Err...ummm...I mean if I actually worked for the NSA that's what I would do, but of course I don't. There is noooo way they would ever hire a lowly peon like myself...I'm just not that smart....or am I? :D :D :D
